Seniors Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)
The purpose of the Seniors Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is to improve the nutritional health of low-income seniors and to increase business for local farmers. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to increase the provision of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey to eligible seniors.
Anyone who is age 60 years of age or older, at the time of application, and has an annual household income of 185% of the Federal Poverty Level (see Federal Poverty Guidelines chart) is eligible for the SFMNP. Due to the small grant amount, the program is available to Ross County residents only at this time.
Eligible seniors receive ten $5 coupons that are valid to use from May to October with authorized farmers at the Chillicothe Farmers Market or the farmers’ roadside stands. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis on a designated day in April at the Ross County Senior Citizens Center on Western Avenue. Announcement of the application date is made through the local newspaper and radio stations. Seniors can also contact the Senior Citizens Center at 773-3544 to obtain the sign-up date.
